The History of Mexican Beer: From Corona to Craft

If you ask someone in Germany what they know about Mexican beer, they will likely mention Corona and a slice of lime. However, the story of cerveza in Mexico is far deeper and more complex than a single brand. Ironically, it is a story that has its roots firmly planted in the soil of Central Europe.

While pre-Hispanic peoples in Mexico were already fermenting beverages like tesgüino (from corn) and pulque (from agave), the beer we know today—the golden, crisp lager—is a direct result of German and Austrian influence in the 19th century.

1. The German Roots of Mexican Lager

In the mid-1800s, Mexico saw a significant influx of German and Austrian immigrants. These newcomers brought with them something the hot, tropical climate of Mexico desperately needed: modern brewing techniques.

  • The Vienna Lager: When the Austrian Archduke Maximilian became Emperor of Mexico in 1864, his court brought a preference for the dark, malty lagers of Vienna. While this beer style eventually faded in Europe, it found a permanent home in Mexico.
  • Legacy Brands: Modern beers like Negra Modelo and Dos Equis Ambar are direct descendants of these 19th-century Vienna lagers.

2. The Rise of the Giants

By the early 20th century, two massive companies emerged that would dominate the Mexican market (and eventually the world):

Grupo Modelo

Founded in 1925 in Mexico City, Modelo became famous for Corona Extra. Its clear glass bottle and legendary marketing made it a global icon of the "beach lifestyle."

  • Fun Fact: Most Mexicans in Mexico do not put a lime in their beer; this is largely an international marketing phenomenon!

Cervecería Cuauhtémoc Moctezuma

Based in Monterrey (a city with deep industrial and German roots), this brewery produced staples like Tecate, Sol, and Indio. The proximity to the United States helped Monterrey become a brewing powerhouse.

3. The "Light Beer" vs. "Authentic" Debate

For decades, the global perception of Mexican beer was limited to light, refreshing lagers like Corona or Pacifico. These were designed for the heat—crisp, clean, and best served ice-cold.

However, within Mexico, there has always been a preference for more substantial beers like Victoria (Vienna style) or Bohemia (Pilsner style). Bohemia, in particular, is often cited as one of the best mass-produced Pilsners in the world, frequently winning international awards.

4. The Modern Craft Revolution

In the last 15 years, Mexico has experienced a massive boom in Cerveza Artesanal (Craft Beer). Small breweries in Baja California (Tijuana and Ensenada), Mexico City, and Guadalajara are pushing the boundaries of traditional styles.

  • Ingredients: Many Mexican craft brewers are experimenting by adding local ingredients like cocoa, vanilla, and even Mexican chilies to their stouts and IPAs.
  • Top Breweries to Watch: Cervecería Wendlandt, Insurgente, and Colima are leading the charge on the international stage.

5. Finding Mexican Beer in Germany

If you are a Mexican expat in Germany or simply a fan of the culture, you are no longer limited to the expensive Coronas at the supermarket:

  • Major Retailers: Larger REWE or Edeka stores now frequently stock Modelo Especial, Pacifico, and Dos Equis.
  • Specialized Shops: For the more traditional or craft options, visit the grocery stores in our directory. Many now ship artisanal Mexican craft beers throughout the EU.

Conclusion

The history of Mexican beer is a perfect example of cultural hybridization. It started with European techniques, adapted to use American corn and tropical conditions, and has now returned to the world as a distinct, multi-billion dollar industry.
