Cinco de Mayo vs Mexican Independence Day: What's the Difference?

If you live outside of Mexico, especially in the United States or Europe, you might think that Cinco de Mayo is Mexico's Independence Day. It’s a common mistake, but if you say this to a Mexican, you’ll likely get a gentle (or not-so-gentle) correction.

To clear up the confusion once and for all, we’ve put together this guide to the two most famous dates on the Mexican calendar.

1. September 16th: The Real Independence Day

This is the "Big One." On the night of September 15th, every city and town in Mexico gathers in the central square (zapping) to hear the "Grito de Dolores" (The Cry of Independence).

  • The History: It marks the start of the war for independence against Spain in 1810, when the priest Miguel Hidalgo rang his church bell and called the people to arms.
  • How it's celebrated: Massive parties, fireworks, traditional music (Mariachi!), and of course, a huge feast including Chiles en Nogada.
  • In Germany: The Mexican community and Embassy host "El Grito" events in major cities like Berlin and Frankfurt. Check out our guide to celebrating the Grito in Germany.

2. May 5th: Cinco de Mayo (The Battle of Puebla)

Contrary to popular belief, Cinco de Mayo is NOT a major national holiday in Mexico. Except for the state of Puebla, it’s a relatively minor date on the Mexican calendar.

  • The History: It commemorates the Battle of Puebla in 1862, where a smaller, ill-equipped Mexican army defeated the much larger and better-equipped French army of Napoleon III.
  • The "USA Effect": Why is it so huge in the US? In the 1960s and 70s, Chicano activists in California popularized the holiday as a symbol of pride and resistance. Later, beer companies recognized its marketing potential, turning it into the "Margarita and Taco" festival we know today.
  • The Perception: To many Mexicans, Cinco de Mayo feels like a celebration of Mexican culture that has been "exported" and somewhat commercialized abroad.

Why the Confusion?

The confusion largely stems from globalization. As Mexican culture spread, Cinco de Mayo became the primary "Mexican Day" in the international consciousness. Successive generations of expats and savvy marketers helped cement its status as a global celebration of "all things Mexican," even if its historical significance is regional.

Conclusion

So, next time May 5th rolls around, enjoy your tacos and margaritas! But make sure you save your loudest "¡Viva México!" for the night of September 15th. That’s when the real party happens.
